The second edition of the 2026 MTN Elite U-19 Championship has officially got underway at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, following a colourful ceremonial kick-off on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
The opening ceremony marked the beginning of another exciting chapter in Ghana’s youth football development, as some of the country’s most promising young footballers prepare to battle for regional pride while showcasing their talents on a national stage.
The ceremonial kick-off was led by Hon. Eric Edem Agbana, Chairman of the Planning Committee and Member of Parliament for Ketu North.
He was joined by Ghana Football Association Executive Council Member Samuel Aboabire, National Juvenile Committee Chairman Joe Salam Abubakar, Vice-Chairman of the Organising Committee Enoch Agyare Addo, as well as committee members Samuel Owusu Amoah and Michael Fiaduse, alongside other football officials and stakeholders.
The ceremony officially set the stage for an exciting 11-day championship, which brings together talented young footballers from across the country to compete, develop their abilities and attract the attention of scouts and national team selectors.
The opening fixture saw the Volta Region take on the Ashanti Region in a highly anticipated Group A encounter.
The action-packed opening day also featured three additional matches. Defending champions Eastern Region began their title defence against the Upper West Region, while Central Region faced Brong Ahafo Region in a Group B contest.
The day’s fixtures were rounded off with Upper East Region taking on the Northern Region in another Group B encounter.
The MTN Elite U-19 Championship continues to serve as an important platform for identifying and nurturing the next generation of Ghanaian football stars. Beyond the competition for regional glory, the tournament provides young players with valuable competitive experience and an opportunity to take the next step in their football careers.
Proudly sponsored by MTN Ghana, the championship forms a key part of the Ghana Football Association’s “Power to the Youth” initiative, which seeks to create a structured pathway for talented young players to progress from grassroots football to the professional game and, ultimately, the national teams.
With the competition now underway, all eyes will be on Prampram over the next 11 days as Ghana’s emerging football talents take centre stage and compete for the opportunity to write their names into the future of Ghana football.
